All That You Wanted To Know About Tanorexia
- Category: Tanning Addiction
Tanorexia, in simple words, can be defined as obsession to tanning. There are numerous males and females across the globe who are addicted to tanning. Despite being aware of the possible risks associated with tanning, people suffering from Tanorexia continue to opt for one tanning session after the other.
The problem of tanorexia is just like any other tanning addiction. In some cases, people may also experience symptoms similar to narcotics withdrawal, when asked to refrain from UV tanning. Some of the symptoms that a person may have to deal with on refraining from UV tanning includes nausea, dizziness and even shakes.
The primary cause of tanorexia is UV rays. The problem of tanorexia is only restricted to UV based tanning. People who opt for non UV tanning do not deal with tanorexia. It is for this reason that people suffering from tanorexia do not like slathering on sunless tanning lotions and sprays.
The reason for the same being that UV rays affect the production of a hormone called endorphins inside the body. Endorphins, also known as the happiness hormones, create a sense of euphoria in the brain. Tanning causes the release of these hormones, making people happy. It is for this reason that people often find themselves addicted to tanning. This makes tanning similar to drug, causing addiction.
The addiction to tanning can grow stronger over a period of time, especially if you indulge in tanning sessions more often. Since the addiction for UV tanning is strong, tanorexics are constantly looking for some way or the other to tan their bodies. So in case, they are unable to find enough sunlight during the winter season, they head for UV based tanning beds.
Make note that tanning from UV based tanning beds is even more harmful than lying in the sun for long hours. This is because tanning lamps emit four times more damaging UVA rays as compared to the sun.
Another major cause of tanorexia is the fear of being faded. People dealing with the problem constantly feel that their tan will fade away and they may not look as good. Some individuals even feel old and sick if they do not go in for regular tanning sessions. As a result, they retort to constant tanning. In some cases, people even go to extremes to maintain their tan.
Like every other thing, excess of tanning is bad too. Premature signs of aging such as skin wrinkling, freckles, and spots are common unwanted effects of tanorexia. Tanorexics often deal with numerous skin disorders. And what's more? People suffering from tanorexia are at a much higher risk of skin cancer or melanoma.
Thus, it is recommended that you steer clear of any kind of obsession with tanning. Get yourself the golden glow but make sure you aren't addicted.
